    Description

    Hirase's scallop (
    Volachlamys hirasei
) is an uncommon pectinid shell occurring around east Asian coasts (chiefly a few limited localities in western Japan). Although this species typically has strong radial costa on the shell surface like the other pectinids, a few ones have weakened costa and the shell surface was almost smooth. The latter phenotypic variation is very rare and called
    Volachlamys hirasei
    var.
    ecostata
. The auctioned specimen was collected from the Seto Inland Sea, Japan (50.2 mm in shell length and 52.8 mm in shell height, a successful bidder will have detailed data of collection). Enrich your shell collections with this rare and valuable shell!
