Description

1.25 inches high, 1.75 inches long. Very heavy, the quality is exquisite.
I've seen a few antique silver box covers for miniature tefillin, but they are almost always completely blank. Only one time I remember seeing a miniature silver box cover pair that was very simply engraved, just on the top. This box (yes, I only have one, this is half of the pair), is incredible, the pictures speak for themselves. While the flower engraving reminds me of flowers engraved on Polish boxes (as seen in the Sotheby's photo), the blessing reminds me of Hebrew engraving from Germany. Before 1888, there were no national hallmarks for silver from Germany, and you often see silver Judaica made in the 1870's and 1880's in Germany completely lacking hallmarks. So while I think it's likely Polish (most great Polish silver tefillin boxes also have no hallmarks), there is a strong possibility for Germany or like some cleverly state "Polish-German border".
This is also the first time I can remember seeing any silver tefillin box with the blessing engraved.
